ートイプードル・モカの2泊3日 ―

■ はじめに

犬の変化は、必ずしも大きなものとは限りません。

• 走り回るようになった。

• 他の犬と遊べるようになった。

• 呼び戻しができるようになった。

  
  

そうした変化は誰の目にも分かります。

しかし本当に大切な変化は、もっと静かに起こることがあります。

今回ご紹介するのは、トイプードルのモカちゃん、5歳の女の子です。

■ おびえた表情の奥にあったもの

モカは到着した時から強い緊張状態にありました。

小さな体をさらに小さく見せるように身を固くし、周囲を警戒していました。

丸い可愛らしい顔立ちですが、目にはどこか怯えた表情がありました。

匂いを嗅ぐこともほとんどありません。

環境を探索することもありません。

犬にとって匂いを嗅ぐことは情報収集です。

周囲を理解し、安全を確認し、自分の居場所を見つけるための大切な行動です。

しかしモカには、その余裕がありませんでした。

ただ静かに周囲を見ながら時間を過ごしていました。

時折、他の犬からしつこく匂いを嗅がれたり、ちょっかいを出されたりすると、歯を見せて

吠えることもありました。

攻撃というより、

「それ以上はやめて」

という精一杯の意思表示だったように思います。

■ 抱き上げた時に感じたこと

モカは普段から抱っこされることの多い犬です。

しかし実際に抱き上げてみると、私が想像していたのとは少し違いました。

体を持ち上げる瞬間、モカは筋肉を固くし、自分でも体を支えようとしていたのです。

完全に力を抜いて身を預けるのではありません。

緊張しながらも、自分の体を保とうとしていました。

その感覚は、以前介護犬ジェットを抱き上げていた時の感覚によく似ていました。

犬は言葉では語りません。

けれど体に触れると、その犬がどのように世界と向き合っているのかが少し見えてくること

があります。

モカの中には、不安の中でも自分で頑張ろうとする力が残っていました。

■ 心の緊張は体にも現れる

到着時から便は軟らかく、翌日には血液の混じる下痢便も見られました。

かなり強い軟便でした。

環境の変化による緊張やストレスが消化管にも影響していたのかもしれません。

犬の心と体は別々ではありません。

不安や緊張は行動だけでなく、身体症状として現れることがあります。

しかし三日目になる頃には便の状態も改善し、最終的にはほぼ通常に近い状態へ戻っていま

した。

■ 少しずつ見え始めた周囲の世界

三日目になると、施設にはムクやぽんちゃんをはじめ複数の犬たちが集まり、いつもより賑

やかな一日になりました。

• 犬たちは思い思いに歩き、

• 匂いを嗅ぎ、

• 休み、

• また動き出します。

そんな中で、モカにも少しずつ変化が見られました。

それまで人との距離を取っていたモカが、自分から人へ近づく場面が見られるようになったのです。

表情にもわずかな余裕が生まれていました。

周囲を観察する目にも、初日の強い緊張とは違うものが感じられました。

■ 年上の柴犬の匂いを自分から嗅いだ

私が最も驚いたのは、その後の出来事でした。

モカが14歳の柴犬ムクのお尻の匂いを嗅いでいたのです。

犬にとって匂いを嗅ぐことは単なる好奇心ではありません。

相手を知ろうとする行動であり、社会的な挨拶でもあります。

到着直後のモカには、その余裕がありませんでした。

周囲を理解することよりも、自分の不安に対処することで精一杯だったのでしょう。

しかしこの時のモカは違いました。

自分から他の犬へ関心を向けていました。

ほんの数秒の出来事でしたが、私にはとても大きな変化に見えました。

■ アマーリエという静かな壁

最終日には、声を掛けると自分で部屋から出られるようになりました。

しかしその先には進めませんでした。

部屋の入口近くにはアマーリエが静かに横になっています。

アマーリエは何もしていません。

ただそこにいるだけです。

けれどモカにとっては、その大きな体が大きな心理的障壁だったのでしょう。

何度か前に出ようとしながらも、結局アマーリエを越えてワンダーランドの奥へ進むことは

できませんでした。

歩いた距離もほんのわずかでした。

それでも、自分の足で部屋を出て、周囲を見渡し、人や犬に関心を向けることはできるよう

になっていました。

■ 飼い主さんが感じた変化

お迎えに来られた飼い主さんは、

「モカが変わった気がする」

と話してくださいました。

私たちから見れば、とても小さな変化かもしれません。

しかし毎日モカと暮らしている飼い主さんだからこそ感じられる変化があったのでしょう。

そしてLINEには、

「私の大事なモカを大切にお世話してくれて本当にありがとうございました」

という言葉が添えられていました。

今回の2泊3日で、モカが劇的に変わったわけではありません。

アマーリエを越えることもできませんでした。

自由に歩き回ったわけでもありません。

けれど、

• 人に近づくこと。

• 犬の匂いを嗅ぐこと。

• 部屋から出ること。

その一つひとつが、モカにとっては勇気のいる挑戦だったはずです。

犬の成長は時にとても静かです。

しかしその小さな変化こそが、次の一歩につながっていきます。

年上の柴犬の匂いを嗅いだあの日。

モカの世界は、ほんの少しだけ広がったのかもしれません。

The Day Mocha Sniffed Another Dog

— A Small World Opens for Mocha During Her Three-Day Stay —

■ Introduction

Changes in dogs are not always dramatic.

Sometimes a dog begins to run freely.

Sometimes a dog learns to play with others.

Sometimes a dog finally comes when called.

Those changes are easy for everyone to see.

But some of the most important changes happen quietly.

Today I would like to introduce Mocha, a five-year-old female Toy Poodle.

■ What Was Hidden Behind Her Frightened Expression

From the moment she arrived, Mocha was extremely tense.

She seemed to make her small body even smaller, holding herself rigid while carefully

watching everything around her.

She had a sweet and adorable face, but there was fear in her eyes.

She rarely sniffed the environment.

She showed little interest in exploring.

For dogs, sniffing is a way of gathering information. It helps them understand their surroundings, assess safety, and find their place within a new environment.

Mocha simply did not have the emotional room to do that.

Instead, she spent much of her time quietly observing the world around her.

Occasionally, when another dog persistently sniffed her or became too intrusive, she

would bare her teeth and bark.

It did not seem aggressive.

Rather, it felt like her way of saying:

"Please don't come any closer."

■ What I Felt When I Lifted Her

Mocha is clearly accustomed to being carried.

However, when I actually picked her up, I noticed something unexpected.

At the moment her body left the ground, she tightened her muscles and attempted to support herself.

She did not completely surrender her weight.

Even while nervous, she was trying to maintain control of her own body.

The feeling reminded me of Jet, an elderly dog I once cared for.

Whenever I said, “Ready? One, two, three,” before lifting him, Jet would tighten his muscles and help support himself.

Dogs communicate without words.

Yet sometimes, simply touching them reveals something about how they face the world.

Despite her anxiety, Mocha still possessed a quiet determination to manage things on her own.

■ When Emotional Stress Appears in the Body

When Mocha arrived, her stool was already soft.

The following day, blood appeared in her diarrhea.

It was a significant gastrointestinal reaction.

Perhaps the stress and tension of a new environment had affected her digestive system.

Mind and body are not separate in dogs.

Fear and anxiety often appear not only in behavior but also in physical symptoms.

By the third day, however, her stool gradually improved and eventually returned to

nearly normal consistency.

■ A Growing Awareness of the World Around Her

On the third day, several dogs were staying at the facility, making the environment livelier than usual.

Some wandered through the Wonderland.

Some rested quietly.

Others exchanged greetings and explored together.

Amid this activity, I began to notice subtle changes in Mocha.

The dog who had carefully avoided people now occasionally approached them on her own.

Her expression seemed softer.

There was a small but noticeable change in the way she observed the world.

The intense vigilance of the first day was beginning to ease.

■ The Day She Chose to Sniff Another Dog

The moment that surprised me most came later that day.

Mocha approached an elderly fourteen-year-old Shiba Inu and sniffed the dog's hindquarters.

To many people, this may seem insignificant.

To dogs, however, it is an important social behavior.

Sniffing is not merely curiosity.

It is a greeting.

It is a way of gathering information and beginning a social relationship.

When Mocha first arrived, she had no capacity for such interactions.

All of her energy was devoted to coping with her own anxiety.

But now something had changed.

For the first time, she directed her attention outward.

She chose to learn about another dog.

The moment lasted only a few seconds.

Yet to me, it represented a meaningful step forward.

■ Amalie: A Quiet Obstacle

By the final day, Mocha could leave her room when encouraged.

However, she could not go much farther.

Near the doorway lay Amalie, our resident German Shepherd.

Amalie was doing nothing at all.

She was simply resting.

Yet for Mocha, the presence of a large shepherd quietly occupying the entrance seemed

to create an enormous psychological barrier.

Several times she considered moving forward.

Several times she stopped.

In the end, she never crossed beyond Amalie into the deeper areas of the Wonderland.

She walked only a short distance.

But she did leave her room.

She looked around.

She watched people and dogs.

She became interested in the world beyond her immediate fear.

That alone was meaningful.

■ The Change Her Owner Could See

When Mocha's owner arrived to pick her up, she said:

"I think Mocha has changed."

To us, the changes may have appeared very small.

But those who live with a dog every day often notice things that others cannot.

Later, her owner returned to bring us souvenirs from her trip.

She also sent a message that read:

"Thank you very much for taking such good care of my precious Mocha."

During these three days, Mocha did not undergo a dramatic transformation.

She never walked confidently throughout the Wonderland.

She never passed Amalie.

She never became a bold, outgoing dog.

Yet she did something important.

She approached people.

She sniffed another dog.

She stepped outside her room.

Each of those actions required courage.

Growth in dogs is often quiet.

And sometimes the smallest changes become the foundation for everything that follows.

On the day she chose to sniff another dog, Mocha's world may have become just a little

bit bigger.
